Whole Grains Quiz Answer Key
- How many servings of whole grains should you get each day?
A widely accepted guideline for nutrition is 3–5 servings of whole grains. Include plenty of whole grains such as wheat bread, brown rice, and soba noodles in your diet.
- What do whole grains such as barley or oats contain?
Whole grains are foods with high nutritional value. Although they primarily contain carbohydrates and fiber, they also contain small amounts of fat and protein. They are also rich in vitamins such as vitamin B and minerals such as selenium.
- Which of the following products are mostly whole grains?
Foods made from unrefined (unprocessed) flours and grains such as millet, bulgur, and whole wheat contain the most whole grains. Brown rice, soba noodles, wheat bagels, barley, and oatmeal are all great sources of whole grains. Foods rich in bran are good grain choices too. Bran is the outer layer of the grain seed, and it is rich in fiber, B vitamins, and antioxidants.
Foods baked with refined (processed) flours such as white bread typically contain much less fiber and may be depleted of certain nutrients that whole grains contain. When shopping, look for terms such as “100% whole grain” or “100% whole oats,” as manufacturers sometimes print “whole grain” on products containing only miniscule amounts of whole grains. Also look for foods that contain bran, which is a very important component of a whole grain.
